Tebow sports bracelet to honour Marine hero, 22, who lost his limbs serving in Afghanistan

America’s most famous quarterback paid tribute to a Marine, who lost both his legs while fighting in Afghanistan, when he jetted in to New York this week.

Tim Tebow arrived in the city sporting a bracelet bearing the hero’s name – a gesture that left the soldier lost for words.

'Oh wow. Really?' was all Cpl. Michael Nicholson could utter when he heard the news of the star's touching tribute.

Touched: War hero Michael Nicholson was moved that the famous quarterback was wearing a wristband in his honour, the pair met earlier in the week when Tebow visited the ex-marine at his Tampa home

The 24-year-old football phenomenon had visited the war hero at his Tampa home last week.

The player, known for quoting the bible after games, was spotted wearing the red wristband with Nicholson’s name emblazoned in yellow, after arriving in new Jersey on a private jet.

The 22-year-old ex-marine lost both of his legs and part of his arm while on a duty tour of Afghanistan last year.

And Nicholson was touched that Tebow took time out of his busy schedule to visit him at his home in Florida.

The former marine described the faith-minded football star as ‘humble’ and credited him with raising his spirits.

'It was great that he came out and spent some time with me,' he told the New York Post. 'It meant so much.'

As well as talking about Nicholson’s recovery the pair animatedly discussed how they both played football for rival teams while at high school in Florida.

The former Denver Broncos player was also sporting three other wrist bands - each honoring causes close to the quarterback’s heart.

The faith-minded quarterback, the latest sign up to the New York Jets, was then whisked on to Gang Green’s Florham Park training headquarters in a black SUV.

This week's move to bring Tebow to New York had many fans and gridiron pundits shaking their heads, especially since the team gave its starting quarterback Mark Sanchez a three-year, $40.5million contract extension earlier this month.

With the NFL's salary cap, Tebow's base salaries for the next few seasons were attractive: $1.942 million in 2012, $2.266 million in 2013 and $2.590 million in 2014.
